Smoke, explosions and paintball were all part of the Dixie State College ROTC fall field training event that took place last weekend. The DSC ROTC program, in conjunction with the Southern Utah University ROTC program, hosts a field training event each semester in which cadets (referred to as M1, M2, M3 and M4 depending on their years of experience) are each given objectives to carry out against an opposing enemy.

Dixie State student bests Army ROTC peers in physical test

Jessie Ingraham, a Dixie State College Army ROTC cadet finished ahead of 450 other cadets in the two-mile run at the Army Physical Fitness Test held on Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington State. Ingraham, a BYU senior, finished the run in 13 minutes and 12 seconds, making her the top female in this event among her cadet peers and making one of the fastest times recorded this summer.

A member of Provo's Municipal Council will soon expand her role from serving the city to serving her country. Laura Cabanilla, a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army Reserves, announced Monday she will be deployed to Kuwait in August. It will be her first deployment.

Amidst camouflage and battle cries Army ROTC cadets learned basic dodging, crawling and rolling recently to prepare them for future training and provide opportunities to exercise leadership skills. The cadets practice these Individual Movement Techniques called IMT’s to increase survivability on the battle field.

Friends and family will be holding funeral services this week in Mesa, Ariz., for Army Capt. Cory J. Jenkins, a BYU graduate who was killed in Southern Afghanistan last Tuesday. Jenkins and three other U.S. soldiers were killed after their vehicle hit an improvised explosive device.
