On Cadre quality in the ROTC

The cadre in the BYU ROTC are exceptional. I have been pleasantly surprised at how the cadre actually cares how well the cadets do. They are always there if you need something. I am in the busy nursing program here so I often miss learning activities and would be lost without the extra time my cadre takes to catch me up and help me succeed in spite of my limitations. Overall the cadre is very professional and caring.

On Leadership experience in the ROTC

The ROTC has given me an amazing chance to be thrust into leadership positions and learn. I have learned what tactics work when leading a group of people and what tactics are not effective. The thing that is unique about the ROTC is that you are not just learning about being a leader in a classroom; you are a real life leader. Almost every day I am in a position where I can work on my leadership skills which is an awesome opportunity.

On being SMP

The simultaneous membership program (SMP) is an awesome deal. I was an enlisted member of the Army Reserves prior to joining the ROTC but wanted to eventually become an officer. The SMP program has given me the opportunity to still train with my unit but at the same time bridge the gap between enlisted and officer. It will give me a leg up, instead of coming in as the typical officer that knows nothing about the real army.

My friends and family are supportive of my participation in the ROTC. They are thankful that I am willing to serve my country and help save lives as a nurse.  Most people are shocked when they find out that I am in the army, especially since I am a girl. After that, though they generally think it is cool. I often have people thanking me for what I do.
