How to Recruit

The Romney Institute and the Business Career Center encourage organizations to meet and work with the Romney Institute students. Employers can take advantage of many different opportunities to interact with Romney MPA students in both academic and professional settings.

Visiting Campus

An on-site visit to the Romney Institute of Public Management provides a firsthand look at students, faculty, and other recruiting resources. Recently, the Marriott School of Management opened a state-of-the-art recruiting and interviewing facility, the Steven and Georgia White Business Career Center. In addition, you can get involved in many different activities with the Romney Institute students:

Information Sessions.

Visit campus and present information on your organization and available positions. On-campus presentations are an excellent opportunity for you to meet students interested in your organization.

Course Projects.

Engage a student group to research a current organizational issue and make recommendations.

Course Presentations/ Lectures.

Share relevant information with students about your industry and organization during an in-class discussion or case study. Please schedule these presentations with faculty in advance.

Club Interaction.

Build a presence by sponsoring an event with one or more of the school’s clubs or associations.

Field Studies.

Hire students to perform research, prepare reports, and provide professional-quality consulting on your real-world challenges under faculty advisement. Contact the Field Studies office at (801)422-8928.

Establishing an Annual Internship Program

A well-established internship program provides your organization with the opportunity to “pre-test” potential employees. Romney MPA students have filled a variety of responsibilities and positions within their internship organizations. For example, they have conducted research for the organization, analyzed issues or problems that the organization was facing and made recommendations to senior leadership. To facilitate a successful internship, a host organization can do three things:

  1. Establish an internship action plan including time frame, projects, assignments, rotation options, and other expectations
  2. Assign a mentor/supervisor with whom the intern can ask questions, discuss management philosophies and styles, receive feedback, and learn about organizational goals and objectives
  3. Provide specific orientation and evaluation on projects and assignments

Timeline.

Generally, the recruiting process for internships occurs between November and April, but most organizations tend to start recruiting in February or early March. The internships normally extend over a four-month period of time from May through August. Students generally work 30 – 40 hours per week.

Remuneration.

Internship pay should be based on several factors including geographic location, type of work required, and financial resources available. However, Romney MPA interns commonly make $12 - $18 per hour. When determining pay, it helps to remember the adage, “You get what you pay for.” For more ideas on how your organization can creatively finance an internship, please see the following link on Creative Financing for Internships.
