How to Find the Internship You Want
Finding the internship you want can be challenging as many employers hire fewer interns than full-time employees. Finding a quality internship that interests you is just like finding a job, it requires lots of time, research, and networking. The more time you put into the hunt, the more likely you are to find an internship that is exciting to you and likely to propel you to the career of your choice.
Set Your Targets
Whether your requirements be geographic, industry-specific, functionally, or employer-specific, draw up a list of target companies. Setting a goal of where you would like to intern will better help you to get there.
Visit the Career Center
A large number of employers come to campus each year to recruit interns. Visit with a career counselor to find out if any employers that interest you are coming to campus and how to best purse them.
Utilize eRecruiting
Many great internship opportunities are posted on eRecruiting throughout the fall and winter semesters. Make sure to keep your profile current and check often for new postings of available positions.
Marriott School Internship Office
The Marriott School maintains a specific internship office located in 460 TNRB. The office has listings of many local and a few national internships which also offer students academic credit for completing the opportunity. They are available to visit online at: http://marriottschool.byu.edu/internship/
Network
A great way to find an internship is to reach out to alumni at the employer you are targeting. Often internships are created at the last minute and a good relationship combined with expressed interest to the right alum can pay large dividends. Prepare well for your conversations by researching the employer thoroughly. Ask lots of pertinent questions, as this will display the depth of your research and set you apart from other candidates.
Visit the Employer
After you have visited with several alumni at the targeted employer, you can ask to visit the employer onsite. Many employers look very positively on candidates who come to visit on their own dime and pursue internship/job opportunities. Use the opportunity to meet with recruiters and other applicable people with the employer. Dress your best, ask lots of questions, and be respective of their time.
