Entering the BPC is Easy!

BPC stands for Business Plan Competition, and whether you’ve got a new entry or whether you’ve already entered something like Student Innovator of the Year (SIOY), Business Model Competition (BMC) or BYU Opportunity Quest, it’s never been easier to get your plan entered!

If you’ve already entered BMC or SIOY or Opportunity Quest or UEC or anything, you can sign the required BPC forms and submit your current entry AS IS!  Of course, that is only the minimum entry requirement – you’ll probably do better if you add to what you already have by filling out our business plan template as well. Or maybe at least fill out the summary page on the template to submit along with what you have so far – that will probably help you.

If this is your first entry, you can write your plan from scratch or you can start with our business plan template!  Our template is an informative document that explains what each section is for and how to write it.  Also, the template emphasizes the need to test and validate your business ideas in a solid business modeling process – it’s a great tool to get started with!  In addition to our template, you can use LivePlan by Palo Alto Software for free – just email bpc@byu.edu with your NetID and ask for the free promo code!

If your plan or video submission (or better yet, your plan accompanied by your video submission) is too big to send via email as specified in the Rules and Info Packet, then you can submit it using WeTransfer.  Simply put bpc@byu.edu in the box that says “Enter friend’s email address(es)” and upload your plan or video submission or both directly.

Detailed BPC Submission requirements and typical judging criteria are finalized and posted in the Rules and Info Packet on this website on the Rules & Forms tab.  There is no minimum plan length and accompanying video submissions are encouraged (although not required). Feel free to use the templates or software found on the Resources tab on this website (at least fill out the summary on the first page of the Word template) to submit along with your video presentation.  But since there’s no minimum required length, everyone who’s done anything this year should at least be able to enter a minimum-level entry simply by submitting what they already have and signing the required cover sheets.

BYU Opportunity Quest Winners!

Congratulations to all our Opportunity Quest entries!  These were great plans, and we’re going to help everyone get them into UEC, other external competitions, and our own BPC finals by Feb 23rd.  Seriously, great job across the board.

It took all day, but we narrowed down the winners to:

1st Place for $2,000:  FlexLeg

2nd Place for $1,000:  Sonic Lenz

3rd Place for $500:  Rent180

Congratulations to our winners, and thanks and congratulations to all our entries!  Everyone who enters now has  PDF file that can be used to enter just about every competition out there – stay tuned for emails and announcements about how to do that and when!

BPC Speed Pitch

Top Four Reasons to Participate in the Speed Pitch

1) Grab Some Cash: That’s right! We’re giving away $1,000 in cash to the top 3 pitches ($500/$300/$200 to 1st/2nd/3rd, respectively)

2) Get Experience: If you want your ideas to turn into realities, you better know how to pitch it! You never know when you’ll need to give a 30-second “elevator pitch” of your idea to an investor, a potential customer, or a prospective teammate.

3) Build Your Team: During the event you will get to pitch in front of multiple judges but will also get a crack at pitching to a full audience of peers who are interested in entrepreneurship. You will have the opportunity to make your contact information available to recruit potential partners.

4) You’re Almost There: Many of you submitted some fantastic ideas into our Idea Pitch. The Speed Pitch entry form really is just a couple lines of text away from the Idea Pitch. Check it out if you haven’t and see just how close you are to a viable Speed Pitch entry!

What is the Speed Pitch All About?

You and your team (if assembled) will have a short amount of time (2 minutes or less) to quickly run through your business opportunity with an experienced entrepreneur or investor. You will then get some time for feedback on the idea and pitch. Once done with that station, you will move to the next and repeat the process (you’ll do this up to 20 times, depending on entries) Think of it as speed dating for entrepreneurs. Participants in past years have found this to be an invaluable exercise in learning how to talk about their business concept.

In addition to the 1:1 stations with investors and entrepreneurs, you will also get to pitch to the crowd. During this pitch, you not only get to practice standing in front of large groups with your idea, you can leverage your time to recruit interested people to join your team. It’s a win-win!
