Business Management 371R, Section 003: Women in Entrepreneurship

One of the most popular classes on campus, the Entrepreneur Lecture Series, is a repeatable course offered to any student on campus who is interested in entrepreneurship.

The course consists of a weekly one-hour lecture by successful entrepreneurs and business persons on subjects significant to entrepreneur-type opportunities. These entrepreneurs frequently discuss the challenges and rewards of entrepreneurship and give the students advice on getting started, being successful in business, and growing the business. The entrepreneurs also discuss the five phases of an entrepreneur's business:

  1. Concept and planning
  2. Startup
  3. Growth
  4. Maturity
  5. Harvest

The fastest growing category of entrepreneurs today is women, and they have tremendous talents, along with the wonderful female attributes of personal relationships, understanding, leadership, nurturing, and so forth. Many female BYU students will at some time, of choice or necessity, provide some measure of support for themselves and their families. Yet, at the same time, they have concerns about the demands of being an entrepreneur, whether they are a single woman (with or without a family), or are a mother and wife, as well as being an entrepreneur.

When we thought about offering a lecture series specifically oriented towards women entrepreneurs, the student response was immediate and positive. It’s somewhat different from the other entrepreneur lecture series, because we want to give plenty of time for Questions & Answers. Therefore we have created a model which provides for roughly 50 – 60 minutes of lecture/teaching followed by a Q&A session for 20 – 30 minutes.

This section of the Entrepreneur Lecture Series is Fall and Winter semesters at 3:30 - 5:00pm every second Friday. It fulfills the lecture series requirement for both a Business Minor and the Business Management Major at BYU. (Other options include the regular sections of the Entrepreneur Lecture Series, the Entrepreneur Leadership Series, the Executive Lecture Series on Thursdays and the eBusiness Lecture Series on Wednesdays.)
