Conference Reflections from CFE Associate Director John Richards

The Fall 2004 Founders Conference of the BYU Center for Entrepreneurship was an excellent opportunity for faculty, students, and practicing entrepreneurs to gather to advance the cause of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial education. Representatives from these constituencies participated over a two-day period in myriad activities, from socials to intense competitions and contests.

As both a faculty and entrepreneur-founder, I personally gained much from almost every event. I thoroughly relish the opportunity to bring our religion into business, and this center allows that to be done. Principles of the gospel are commingled with the rush of entrepreneurship in a way that is right and edifying.

In particular, I liked the social dinner, the summer scholarship recipient presentations, the case study competition, and the Student Entrepreneur of the Year finals judging. Of course, as an entrepreneur, the opportunity to network with the various participants will, in the end, be the most lasting benefit.
