Costa Rica Retreat Recap

The Rollins Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology Founders gathered once again for a retreat in Costa Rica 30 January - 7 February. The Founders participated in golfing, scuba diving, swimming, river rafting, canoeing, and zip lining. They also held meetings and joined together in a service project. The Founders spent time bonding and sharing their visions of what the CET can do to help students. The interactions ranged from friendshipping to detailed business discussions.

"The retreat allowed for deeper bonding and a time to plan with other Latter-day Saints who share a vision for what BYU's entrepreneurship program can do for the world," says John Richards, CET associate director and founder.

Service Opportunity Found on Retreat

Before the Founders headed to Costa Rica, Founder Chairman Larry Gibson and his wife, Shirley, contacted missionaries about the temporal needs of the people there. The earthquake that hit Costa Rica in early January left many in need of hygiene kits and clothes. The missionaries informed the Gibsons that people joining the LDS Church did not have proper clothes to wear to their Sunday meetings. The Founders were able to bring twenty-two boxes of hygiene kits, ten very large and four smaller bags of clothing, and a suitcase full of clothes for a local missionary. After a lot of divine intervention, the Gibsons located the senior missionaries to give them the supplies.

"We thank the Founders so very much for all that they did to make this possible," Shirley says. "As those sweet ladies at the Humanitarian Center had said, 'The Lord will provide a way for these things to be delivered.' Our experience certainly shows that to be true!"
