Known and loved worldwide, Mary Pickford was the most universally acclaimed actress of her
time. She was "America's Sweetheart" from the beginning of silent motion pictures.
"I had the great fortune to have been born poor. Now I am able to appreciate the value of the
real things and do not put much stress on the things my wealth can buy. The world's been wonderful to me . . . the people have
been wonderful to me. The least I can do is pay back any way I can. Every charity deserves consideration. But I love the very
young and the very old," said Mary Pickford shortly before her death in 1979.
The MARY PICKFORD FOUNDATION came into being as the tangible application of Miss Pickford's sentiments.
It gives many colleges and universities money for scholarships to be awarded to deserving students and continues to support the
charities which were dear to her heart.
