It's a dog-eat-dog world out there, and many college students wonder how they'll survive in an increasingly competitive job market. But this summer, hundreds of students at Brigham Young University's Marriott School of Management equipped themselves with skills to get ahead by interning for some of the biggest names in business.

Taking three weeks in the beginning of the summer to fly across the world to an exotic country seems more like a vacation than a pedagogical tool. But for a handful of Marriott School students, this adventure did more than just entertain — it exposed them to another corner of the world that needed their services.

To do what you love and get paid for it sounds like a dream job — right? A new study by a Brigham Young University public management professor found that landing your dream job might not be the walk in the park you picture. It's probably more like a day at the zoo, and that's not necessarily all good.

Instead of getting an early start on summer boating or hiking, more than twenty Brigham Young University MBA and MPA students spent their free time improving small businesses around the world.

The Marriott School of Management honored Kevin D. Stocks with its highest faculty distinction, the Outstanding Faculty Award, at the annual Marriott School Awards Night on April 3. Along with Stocks, 15 other individuals were recognized at the banquet for their contributions to the school.

Innovating a franchise to fit local conditions may actually lead to less growth, shows a new study from Brigham Young University's Marriott School of Management.

"The Romney Code: The Life and Ethics of George W. Romney" will premiere on BYU Television Monday, Oct. 6, at 8 p.m. MDT. The premiere will include the 30-minute documentary followed by a special 30-minute discussion with Romney family members. An advanced preview of the documentary will air on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 12:30 p.m. between sessions of general conference.

Former Marriott School Professor Gloria E. Wheeler will teach as a Fulbright Scholar at the Institute of Finance and Economics in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

On a recent Marriott School of Management field study trip to Ghana, BYU MPA students teamed with a charity powering rural schools with merry-go-rounds to help alleviate poverty. Empower Playgrounds, which installs playground equipment that converts kid’s energy into real energy, asked BYU MPA students to use their management skills to better place their electricity-generating merry-go-rounds, which are used to power rechargeable lanterns the children can use to study at night.

Thank goodness it’s Thursday. According to a new Brigham Young University study, city employees who work four 10-hour days a week experience lower levels of at-home conflict, which they report translates to higher job satisfaction and productivity. The paper, authored by Rex Facer and Lori Wadsworth of BYU’s Romney Institute of Public Management, appears in this month’s issue of Review of Public Personnel Administration.

Brigham Young University Academic Vice President John Tanner announced the appointment of Gary C. Cornia as the new dean of the Marriott School of Management. Cornia, the Stewart Grow Professor of Public Management, has been serving as director of the school’s George Romney Institute of Public Management since 2004.

BYU Master of Public Administration students won first place at the third annual Utah City Managers Association Case Competition held April 7-9 in St. George, Utah. “This is a competition I look forward to each year,” says Rex Facer, assistant professor of public finance and management and the team’s faculty adviser.

Brigham Young University’s Romney Institute of Public Management named Carolyn Grow Dailey, president and CEO of ASCEND Alliance, as the 2008 Administrator of the Year. The award is given annually to an outstanding man or woman who has achieved distinction after many years of management in the public or nonprofit sector.

Eighteen students from BYU’s Romney Institute of Public Management traveled to Ghana for a two-week educational field study and a chance to share their business knowledge with 12 local nonprofit organizations. The students offered one-on-one consultations to the nonprofits on personal empowerment, timelines, budgets and outcome measurement, as well as open workshops for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on business and personal management. “We’re preparing these students to become managers in the field of international development,” says Jeff Thompson, assistant professor of public management and faculty supervisor.

The planned addition to the N. Eldon Tanner Building is officially underway after ground was broken on the campus of Brigham Young University April 25. The groundbreaking ceremony was conducted by President Cecil O. Samuelson, with Elder W. Rolfe Kerr of the Seventy and Commissioner of Church Education, presiding over activities.

Brigham Young University’s Romney Institute of Public Management honored Bountiful City Manager Thomas R. Hardy with its 2007 Administrator of the Year award at a banquet given in his honor. “Tom has really distinguished himself as an outstanding city manager as well as a great example for the young professionals he has helped develop,” says Rex L. Facer, assistant professor of public management. “He’s known as a straight shooter who truly has the public interest at heart and always pushes for the community’s best interests.” After receiving the award at the March 29 dinner, Hardy said he felt honored to be included on the list of award recipients.
