BYU Language Initiatives

Foreign Language Housing

The Foreign Language Student Residence, on BYU campus, provides a unique opportunity for students to enhance and refine their language skills.  The complex consists of twenty-five apartments for men and women, learning nine different languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.

Residents develop confidence and fluency by practicing the language daily.  They pledge to speak only the target language in the apartment with their roommates, one of whom is a student native speaker.  Together they plan meals, shop, cook, eat, and clean up while communicating in the target language.

Clubs

BYU has over a hundred clubs offered through departments or BYUSA.  Several of these clubs are language oriented, allowing students to learn more about the targeted area and culture.  Each club unifies students with similar interests and helps strengthen their passion for the language.
