Less Commonly Taught Language Requirements (LCTL)
Even if you speak a Less Commonly Taught Language that is not offered through any of our Business Language courses, you may still complete the Business Language component and earn the Global Management Certificate by fulfilling the following requirements:
- Enroll in a 300-level language class or the highest level BYU offers for the language. For example, Hungarian students should take Hungarian 330.
- Choose and read at least 14 articles from business periodicals or journals, and write a one-paragraph summary of each article. Each article must be at least one-page long and must be in-language (in the language you are studying).
- While enrolled in the above class, develop a vocabulary list of at least 300 business vocabulary terms in the target language and English. You should choose vocabulary terms that are new and useful to your field. You can use your reading material (item 2) to develop the vocabulary list.
- Write a five-page business report in English on a business topic of your interest related to the country where the language is spoken. Your topic must be pre-approved by Cynthia Halliday at the Global Management Center. Please contact her at cynthia_halliday@byu.edu or 422-4832.
- Create your resume in language. Ask your foreign language instructor to review it and sign it.
Please turn in all materials and assignments listed above to the Global Management Center (610 TNRB) by the end of the enrolled semester. Label your folder/binder as “LCTL” and include an index for your material. We encourage you to get support and feedback from your foreign language professor and the Global Management Center as you complete the Business Language requirements.
