Fresher, Bolder Marriott Alumni Magazine Design Unveiled

Pick up the Fall 2010 Marriott Alumni Magazine and you will no doubt notice something different — very different. On the eve of its 35th anniversary, the magazine has received a makeover. The completely redesigned publication will offer its engaging content in a new, bolder and even more inviting way.

"The magazine's design had not been overhauled since it changed names 10 years ago from Exchange magazine to Marriott Alumni Magazine," says Joseph Ogden, assistant dean and managing editor. "The new design represents a faster pacing and quicker read to match today's business environment. We also wanted to make a statement that says the school has evolved and our graduates are better than ever."

In preparation for the magazine's makeover, the editorial and design team used research from a BYU MBA field study project as well as a broad examination of other popular magazines to determine the new design direction.

"We are enthusiastic about the magazine's new look. The design is bigger, brighter and bolder," says Emily Smurthwaite, Marriott Alumni Magazine editor. "Our goal with the magazine is to connect alumni to the Marriott School of Management, update them on the latest happenings, foster opportunities for continuing education through our articles and do it in a visually appealing format."

The magazine will continue to focus on business trends, highlighting faculty research and highly practical information that graduates can apply in their personal and professional lives. Magazine departments such as "Inside the Classroom" and "Around the Cooler" will be joined by "Overheard in the Tanner," a slice-of-time look at what students and others in the Tanner Building are talking about.

The magazine originated in 1976 as Exchange magazine with Merrill J. Bateman, former Marriott School dean, as publisher. Since then it has evolved alongside the business school and its alumni. The Fall 2010 issue celebrates the school's rich history with the Marriott Family — featuring J.W. Marriott Jr. on the cover and his April 2010 convocation remarks inside.

"For a number of years the Marriott Alumni Magazine has documented the growth and success of the Marriott School as well as the alumni who read it," says Gary Cornia, dean. "We are excited to see the magazine growing, adapting and excelling as our graduates do."
