Marriott School Academic Internship

Overview

The Marriot School encourages all students to add value to their academic education with an internship related to their major. As students receive hands-on work experience within the internship, they are able to assess their interests, gain confidence, and develop professional skills. Many students have found that internships are the best route to full-time employment following graduation.

Internships may be part-time or full-time, with the length varying from five weeks to one year. The majority of students do internships within the United States, but interest and opportunities in international work experience is steadily increasing.

Internship Credit

The Marriott School Internship Office provides academic credit for business internships that meet the following requirements:

  1. The internship must be a good business related work experience;
  2. The intern must be given learning projects that require higher level reasoning skills;
  3. Interns must have an employer supervisor to train, mentor, and evaluate them;
  4. Interns must work at least 45 hours for every credit hour they are taking, i.e., 90 work hours for two credit hours, 135 work hours for three credit hours.
  5. For more information regarding course requirements refer to the following link: Syllabus

To receive approval for academic credit, students will submit the following papers to the Internship Office:

  1. Experience Provider Information Sheet. This form must be signed by both the intern and the sponsoring employer. It should state the principal duties as well as the responsibilities of the intern, starting and ending dates, work hours, and compensation of the internship experience. Interns should also include their personal learning objectives and goals to accomplish in the internship.
  2. Master Agreement. The sponsor employer is requested to read and sign this form which offers the employer liability insurance coverage for any damage that is incurred by BYU interns.
  3. Student Agreement and Contract. Students will complete and sign these forms

It is only after we have received and reviewed the abovementioned papers and have gotten back to you to give you approval, that you are officially allowed to sign up for the Internship for class credit.

Print out the above forms by clicking on their links. Students may also pick up the above forms at the Marriott School Internship Office, 460 TNRB.

Upper Division Elective Credit

Students may petition through the Undergraduate Management Office to have Business Management 496R take the place of one upper division elective course. The internship must be a strong learning experience in business, and very closely related to the student’s emphasis. Students doing upper division elective credit must complete the course in one semester. The internship class may automatically count for upper division credit for students in Business Management and Entrepreneurship emphases.

Registration

Business majors will register for Business Management 496R for 1, 2, or 3 hours credit, and will receive a letter grade for the class. Pre-Management students and non-business majors will register for Business Management 199R for 1, 2, or 3 hours of pass/fail credit. As such, approval for 496R would be tougher to get than for 196R.

Following registration on AIM, all interns will register on the Internship Office web site where individual records will be created for grading purposes, and journal entries and evaluations will be submitted.

Late Registration

Students who find an internship after the add/drop date in the semester may petition to receive credit through the Marriott School Internship Office. However, it should be noted that the chances of us approving the petition to add/drop the class after the deadlines are minimal.

T-Grade

Students are strongly encouraged to complete the course work within the semester they register. However, when internships begin midpoint or later in the semester or are extended beyond the expected date of completion, students may petition to receive a “T” grade (a temporary holding grade) which allows them to extend assignments into the following semester. All “T” grades will be changed to a letter grade no later than the semester following the semester they register for the internship class. All petitions must be received by and sent to us at msm_internship@byu.edu before the last day of classes for the semester/ term that the student is registered for.

Petition Process

Issues that require students to petition for exception to the internship requirements:

  1. Extending assignments into the following semester.
  2. Adding or dropping the internship class.
  3. Doing less than the required number of hours in the internship.
  4. Upper division elective credit’see the Undergraduate Management Office.
  5. Other

Students may call 422-4573 to have a petition form sent by email or fax, or they may come by the Internship Office, 460, TNRB. After petition forms have been submitted to the Marriott School Internship Office for consideration, students will be notified by email or telephone as soon as a decision has been determined.

International Student Registration

All international students must be at the university for nine months before they may apply for curricular practical training. Following this application in the International Services Office, students may locate an internship experience that is closely related to their field of study. If students are paid a wage in the internship, they must be registered for the internship class.

For academic credit, students must receive an employer prepared letter stating the nature of the internship with duties and responsibilities, and dates when the internship begins and ends. Once the Marriott School Internship Office receives this letter, a second letter will be prepared by the Marriott School Internship Office stating how the internship relates to the student’s field of study.

The two letters must be taken to the International Services Office for final approval, students then will register for internship credit through the university system (as stated under “Registration”). During fall and winter semesters, international students may not work over 20 hours. Spring/Summer employment may extend beyond 20 hours.

Registration for International Internships

International studies and internships are encouraged by the university. The Marriott School Internship Office and Global Management Center Office provide assistance in locating international experiences, as well as the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies.

When students find a business related international internship experience that will occur during fall and/or winter semester, they should receive approval to defer from their undergraduate office. If students desire academic credit, they may come to the Marriott School Internship Office. A contract will be prepared and signed, then delivered by the student to the Kennedy Center. There the students will be assisted through the registration process, and will receive guidance on preparing for their international experience.
