Choose Your Own Path to Success as a Marketing Student

Marketing offers a wide variety of opportunities to take advantage of your own special skill set--whether you like dealing with people, projects, or analysis. Marketing students at BYU are highly recruited by corporate and nonprofit organizations.

Consider the Following Marketing Career Paths:

  • Marketing Managers – Oversees the marketing of business and other types of organizations. Marketing managers focus on the marketplace and the market environment and make decisions that enhance the market position, including determining the organization's products, prices, channels and promotion strategies.

  • Marketing Research Analysts and Directors - as part of a department in house or offsite for a market research firm, this professional is responsible for defining the 'problem', developing research methodology, analyzing data, and interpreting and presenting the results. Today’s demand for information means that the demand for market research and analysis will remain strong both within corporations and through through research firms.

  • The Brand or Product Manager – The marketing career you hear about most often. Brand and product management is key in consumer products industries, where managers operate akin to small business owners who assume responsibilities for the brand or family of brands. Overseeing marketing responsibilities for a product or brand is a challenging, well-paid career. It's a very competitive field, so a bachelor's degree in marketing is a minimum prerequisite. Brand and product managers are often well versed in product and brand marketing, project management, marketing research, and may also focus on new product and service consulting, venture capital, and entrepreneurial ventures.

  • The Sales Manager - One out of every nine people who are fully employed in the United States is a salesperson. Salespeople are among the highest paid company employees and may out-earn their managers and even the CEO. You many wonder why? It is because every company must drive the top line and salespeople are paid to perform. About $1 trillion is spent every year on building customer relationships in business to business and business to consumer sales activities. Getting to know the customer is a great place to start a corporate career and gain recognition.

  • Retailing is another growth opportunity for marketing degree holders. Retailing is a dynamic and changing sector of today’s economy and one that has long been a strength of the marketing department. The amount of retail business being done via the internet continues to rise at a 20+% growth rate. Many major retailers have online business models that open up new career possibilities, including online advertising and business development activities.

  • Non profit sector – The demand for marketing management professionals continues to grow in non profit fields. Some of the interest areas include the arts and culture, community economic development, education, environment, foundations, government, health care, international aid, and social services.
