Many fans eagerly wait for their favorite artist to announce their next tour, only to be disappointed when no local venues are announced. Two BYU MBA students have come up with an idea to get tickets into the hands of loyal fans.

A group of six Brigham Young University students take their cereal very seriously — because for them, figuring out the best way to get cereal from point A to point B earned them $3,000 and first place at the 12th Annual FedEx Freight International Graduate Logistics Case Competition held at the University of Arkansas.

Brigham Young University's MBA program is climbing the charts according to BusinessWeek's latest rankings that place BYU at 22nd in the nation - the program's highest ranking since the publication started grading MBA programs twenty years ago.

The 2009 Princeton Review's "The Best 296 Business Schools" ranked BYU's Marriott School of Management as the nation's most family friendly business school.

Some enterprising students, equipped with scholarships, business contacts and a faculty-inspired challenge, orchestrated the Marriott School of Management’s first foreign business excursion to Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

A study conducted by four Brigham Young University MBA students in conjunction with The Harris Poll recently asked Americans about nine areas in their lives that contribute to their overall happiness. The responses were then used to create a “National Happiness Index” that can be used to track changes in happiness over time.

Two student businesses from BYU’s Marriott School of Management, Klymit and SchoolTipline, won honors and cash awards at the 25th annual Global Moot Corp Competition — the Super Bowl of business plan competitions. Klymit, creator of a revolutionary insulation system for outdoor gear, won $5,000 as the first runner-up and was also recognized with the Outstanding Written Plan and Outstanding Product awards.

Brigham Young University Academic Vice President John Tanner announced the appointment of Gary C. Cornia as the new dean of the Marriott School of Management. Cornia, the Stewart Grow Professor of Public Management, has been serving as director of the school’s George Romney Institute of Public Management since 2004.

The Marriott School of Management’s Department of Organizational Leadership and Strategy presented Joan Dixon with the 2008 William G. Dyer Distinguished Alumni Award. The Dyer Award is presented annually to an alumnus or alumna who makes a significant contribution in the field of organizational behavior.

In an effort to promote entrepreneurship and raise money for charity, the BYU Collegiate Entrepreneurs’ Organization hosted its 2nd annual Omniture Throwdown — the world’s largest rock, paper, scissors tournament. Last year’s event set a record for the largest tournament of its kind with more than 500 participants.

The Kay and Yvonne Whitmore Global Management Center at Brigham Young University presented 14 MBA candidates with Eccles Scholarships for outstanding achievement in international business. Each Eccles Scholar will receive $10,000 to defray the cost of tuition and international experiences during their enrollment. “This year’s Eccles Scholars carry on the fine tradition of outstanding MBA students who are interested in careers in international business,” says Lee Radebaugh, director of the Whitmore Global Management Center.

Studying finance has proven to be a profitable investment for six Marriott School students who were selected as MBA finance scholars. Four students were named Stoddard Scholars and two were named Questar Scholars.

Brigham Young University's business and law schools are among the top 50 in the United States, reports U.S.News & World Report in its "America's Best Graduate Schools" issue, on sale Monday, March 31. Other BYU graduate programs and specialties rank in the top 100 in their categories. The Marriott School of Management is ranked 29th, tying its highest ranking ever from U.S. News, while the J. Reuben Clark Law School is ranked 46th.

Racing down a professional ski course was just part of the University of Denver’s 2008 Race and Case competition, where six Marriott School MBA students earned first place in the combined skiing and ethics case event. “These students have been wonderful representatives of the Marriott School’s commitment to ethical decision-making in business,” says Craig Merrill, MBA program director.

Brigham Young University’s Marriott School of Management has announced eight MBA candidates as its 2008 Hawes Scholars. The honor, which carries a cash award of $10,000, is the highest distinction given to second-year MBA students at the school. “These students have impressed both the MBA faculty and classmates with their tendency to make the most out of their opportunities,” says Craig Merrill, MBA program director.

Field trips have taken on new meaning for eight MBA students who traveled to Switzerland this fall as part of the MBA International Human Resource Management class. Throughout the week-long trip, students met with global business executives from companies including Nestlé, Cisco Systems and Dow Chemical, to learn how each develops global leaders.

With an idea designed to revolutionize online shipping, Marriott School student Matthew Pickard won the first annual BYU Web Business Idea Competition and a $3,000 cash award. WEBIC is a new competition sponsored by the Rollins Center for eBusiness — promoting the use of the Internet in entrepreneurship. Pickard’s business idea, eTake, is a Web site used to bid on shipping rates offered by individuals — not companies.

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree, how lovely are your branches. The Marriott School’s holiday tree holds more than just pretty ornaments, it holds the promise of Christmas for many needy families in Utah County. "We want to get as many people from the Marriott School involved as possible and offer everyone an opportunity to give a little bit of service to someone else," says Kiley Hunt, a first-year MPA student helping with the project. The annual Angel Tree service project — sponsored by the United Way — provides three options to help meet the needs of families and individuals in Utah County.

In recognition for the integration of social issues in research and teaching, The Aspen Institute's Center for Business Education presented the 2007 Faculty Pioneer Award in External Impact to Marriott School Professor Warner Woodworth. “Dr. Woodworth works to transform management schools into institutions that integrate various business models to improve society,” says the institute.

Two graduates from Brigham Young University’s Marriott School of Management won top honors for their doctoral dissertation research at the Academy of Management’s 2007 conference in Philadelphia. Alison Mackey won the award for outstanding dissertation research in business policy and strategy for her research on the link between executive salaries and firm performance.
