Scholarship Application and Financial AidAll applicants who want to be considered for a scholarship are required to apply. First year scholarships are based primarily on undergraduate GPA and test scores. Need and diversity are also considered. The application link is http://marriottschool.byu.edu/aid/. It can also be found by going to the Marriott School home page marriottschool.byu.edu, choosing Students, and then Financial Aid. Scholarship Thank You letters are required of all scholarship recipients. To write the letter, go to www.marriottschool.byu.edu. Under "Students," click "Financial Aid." Then click "Thank You" in the left column. You will be prompted to log in with your netID and password. Follow the instructions on the next page. The default addressee is Romney Institute Scholarship Committee. In addition to Department Scholarships, BYU recently opened the Office of Prestigious Scholarships and Fellowships. This office gives application strategies, feedback, and submission support to students seeking awards such as a Rhodes, Boren National Security, Fulbright, or Carnegie scholarship, among many others. Academic year 2010-2011, one MPA student received both a Fulbright and a Boren Fellowship to study social entrepreneurship and the Thai language for one year in Thailand & Laos. There are numerous scholarship opportunities "out there" and we encourage you to seek financial aid opportunities from a number of sources. One site that has been recommended to us that you might check out is fastweb.com; however, recognize there are many other opportunities and sites available. Policies and ProceduresBoth the Graduate Handbook and the MPA Handbook include policies and procedures that affect you and your graduate school experience. BYU Graduate HandbookFrom the BYU home page, byu.edu, type "Catalogs" in the QuickFinder search field. Follow the links to the Graduate Catalog for 2011-2012. Pay attention to the first 30 pages that cover general university information and the section "George W. Romney Institute of Public Management" which you find alphabetized under the "P's" for Public Management. MPA HandbookFrom the MPA home page, mpa.byu.edu, under Current Students you will find the link Student Handbook. Route YRoute Y is the university's secure intranet, accessible with your unique ID and password. From Route Y, choose Personal Information and verify or update your contact information. You are encouraged to explore other Route Y links, under the tabs Communications, Miscellaneous, School, and Work. Career Services InformationFinding your internship and future job begins now. The responsibility to get an internship and a job is YOURS. Tanya Harmon (tanya_harmon@byu.edu), the Director of Career Services, will provide services that assist you in preparing for employment. P MGT 642R is designed to provide exposure to various career opportunities using the MPA degree and support you in the process of finding employment. International students, please be aware that the career services we offer are designed for American students. We have a limited network outside the United States. It is very difficult for international students to find employment in the United States after graduation. It is important that you recognize our limitation in this area before you accept admission to this program. We do not want you to come with unrealistic expectations about what the degree or our career services can provide for your future employment opportunities. New Student OrientationAll students are expected to attend New Student Orientation. Orientation is the week before school begins. Keep your schedule free from 8 am to 8 pm each day. Specific details about orientation will be provided by email about the first of August. If you are an international student, you will also be expected to attend the International New Student Orientation sponsored by the Marriott School. The International Graduate Student Orientation begins the first week of August. If you are a CIS scholarship recipient, you will also have CIS meetings to attend in August. Specific dates will be communicated to you. Please adjust your travel plans so that you can be in Provo in time to attend. Expect detailed information to be emailed to you about orientation from the Global Management Center. Educating ZionTo understand about BYU's unique mission and the educational opportunity we have to study and learn while invoking direct help and guidance from the Spirit of the Lord, we encourage you to read at least three of the articles that come from the book Educating Zion (compiled by Welch and Norton). Online Academic CalendarAccess the BYU academic calendar from the BYU home page, byu.edu, choose "Calendars," and then select "BYU Academic Multi-Year calendar." This calendar lists the days classes begin, holidays, finals schedules, etc. Students are required to be available each semester for the entire final exam period. Math CampMath Camp is an excellent way to review your math and quantitative skills before classes begin. The cost is $150 and is held the third week of August. ParkingParking enforcement is now assisted by an automated system that reads license plates on the vehicles very quickly as the parking attendant drives through the parking lot and compares that data to registered vehicles. If a vehicle is in violation of parking policies, the parking attendant will verify the vehicle is parked illegally and issue a ticket appropriately. To accommodate the automated system, the following policies must be closely adhered to: New Parking Policy: License Plates must be visible from the driving lane of each parking aisle.
To register your vehicle with the University, go to Route Y, Miscellaneous/Parking Registration and click on "BYU Parking Registration." A vehicle that is not registered with the University will be ticketed unless you are parked with correct visitor identification in a visitor lot. Business CardsBusiness cards are available for MPA students to use as they network with alumni, presenters, and at conferences. Please follow these directions to obtain business cards:
Name Some people add specialty area by using MPA Class of 20__ and putting the emphasis on the next line. You do not have to include all of the items above. Completely spell out your address. Get a professional sounding email address. Proofread what you type for accuracy. You will receive an email after your file has been sent to the printer. You will then need to wait 3-5 business days to pick up your business cards at the Tanner Copy Center, 550 TNRB. They will cost $10. Please plan ahead. Annual AwardsThere are several awards (not scholarships) awarded each year to 2nd year MPA students. These awards are presented annually at the Administrator of the Year Banquet held in early April. Steward L. Grow Award:The recipient of this award is selected by the faculty of the Romney Institute of Public Management. It is given each year to a second year student who exemplifies the characteristics of Stewart L. Grow, Ph.D., founder of the MPA program at Brigham Young University. Professor Grow was known as a competent and caring person, a friend of students, a loyal colleague, and an example for all to emulate. He was devoted to public service and management excellence in government. Karl N. Snow Award:This award goes to the MPA student with the highest GPA in the graduating class, based on program GPA through the semester prior to graduation, and the input of the faculty. Karl Snow served as the second director of the MPA program from 1969-1978 and is a role model to students of someone who has dedicated his life to service in the public good. Academic Awards:These awards are given to the top ten percent of the graduating class, based upon GPA. Those who qualify for an academic award and who graduate with a GPA above 3.95 receive an award with High Distinction as noted on the graduation program. Recipient(s) of the Snow award do not concurrently receive an Academic Award. Garth N. Jones Award:The Dr. Garth N. Jones Student Writing Award honors Dr. Jones who had a distinguished career in public administration and was a prolific author of papers dealing with public policy and public administration issues. Criteria used to select award recipient(s) includes: 1) the overall quality of the paper; 2) the relevance of the topic to public administration; 3) the potential of publishing the paper in either an academic or practitioner journal; and 4) the unique contribution the paper has for a public policy issue. If you are interested in submitting a writing sample for this award, keep the opportunity in mind throughout your program of study. The call for submission will come in November or December of your second year. |
