An Introduction to Microfinance


John Hatch will teach the class “An Introduction to Microfinance” for students interested in international development and the future of microcredit. It will be a two-day .5 credit course, with additional readings and a report due after the workshop. John Hatch of FINCA International, who is the renowned founder of FINCA and a microcredit professional, will teach this course that he has also taught at a number of other universities.

The topics covered will include the need for microfinance, world poverty and its human costs, definitions of poverty, the microfinance ladder, the genesis of village banking, and the world microfinance movement. Also, there will be training in program methodology, capital mobilization, asset security, program governance, and crisis management.
