CESR Workshops: Helping Those We Serve Reach Economic Self-Reliance

Date/Time: 10-Jul-04, 8:45 am - 1:15pm
Location: 710 TNRB
Description: The BYU Center for Economic Self-Reliance is excited to sponsor the upcoming workshop by Stephen W and Bette Gibson, founders of the Academy for Creating Enterprise in Cebu, Philippines. I (Todd Manwaring writing) recently spent a week at the Academy and was very impressed with the increased level of entrepreneurial understanding that the students gain while attending there. I met with a number of successful graduates whose businesses should not be labeled ‘micro’ due to their much larger size and larger profits. If you are involved with microentrepreneurship then you will not want to miss this workshop and opportunity to network with others involved in similar efforts.

OBJECTIVE: Expose Attendees To Methods Used In Teaching Microenterprise Concepts To Returned Missionaries At The Academy For Creating Enterprise

Emphasis will be participatory/discussion type learning. Attendees will come to appreciate the simplistic, yet motivational activities that teach basic business rules of success. Attendees may also have opportunities to discuss their concerns about the levels of learning among those they serve. All attendees will receive a copy of handouts that contain 2 case studies, rules of success, games played and a CD with 15 Academy lessons on it.

Additional subject matter to be shared:
  • Definition of business
  • Understanding of the GEM cycle
  • The power of teaching with cases
  • Power of teaching through simple stories and role playing
  • Appreciation of diversity among different cultures
  • Using games in teaching

Please preview and spend some time on the attached case.

PRESENTERS: Stephen W and Bette Gibson (www.the-academy.org or e-mail Gibsw@aol.com), developers of the curriculum and the concept for the Academy for Creating Enterprise.

Stephen and Bette moved to Cebu, The Philippines, in November 1999 and recruited and taught the first 175 returned missionaries based on the curriculum the Gibsons will share with workshop attendees. They were also initial funders for the sponsoring 501c3, The Called2Serve Foundation. The Academy has now trained more than 575 returned missionaries. Hundreds of businesses are now helping break the chains of family poverty in branches and wards among the 525,000 church members living in the Philippines. The Academy is completely run by Academy alumni.

Bette is a retired BYU teacher of Early Childhood Education. Steve is Senior Entrepreneur-in-Residence in the BYU Marriott School. As a full time faculty member he also mentors and teaches Entrepreneur courses. He also assists BYUH, BYUI and LDS Business College in developing Entrepreneurship programs. He has started nine different businesses, including a company with eight offices in six states which he sold in 1993.
