CESR Workshops: Facilitating Dialogue for Community Participation

Date/Time: 11-Dec-04, Full Day (Saturday)
Location: 710 TNRB
Description: Lynn Curtis, ProLiteracy Worldwide. We’ve given a new name to the workshop this year, so that no one will miss out because they assumed that “literacy” is only for beginning readers. Literacy is one of the most fundamental skills required by modern society. It is more than reading and writing – it involves thinking, listening, discussing, analyzing, planning – reading the world as well as reading the word. In this workshop, you will learn about FAMA, a technique for facilitating effective discussions that move from problem identification to action planning. You will also learn about how literacy is connected to every aspect of community development and social change. The workshop will include demonstration and practice sessions to develop your skills to facilitate a literacy discussion as well as information on how to adapt materials to different languages and cultural settings. By the end of the day, you will have a new perspective on how to collaborate with people from diverse cultures, and a new set of skills for facilitating dialogue and planning development activities.
