As a research center at Brigham Young University, the center is in a unique position to utilize the passion of students, the expertise of faculty, the dedication of practitioners and the resources of sponsors to push the envelope of social action research and to help others become economically self-reliant.  This approach also allows the center to use innovative management models to solve social problems. 

 

The programs and events at the Center for Economic Self-Reliance focus on social innovation, social entrepreneurship, and economic self-reliance.

  • Social Entrepreneurship ConsultingDuring the month of May, graduate business school students work with small business owners around the world to consult with and improve their ventures. Learn More
  • ESR Conference–This annual conference is for anyone interested in helping families become economically self-reliant locally and throughout the world. The year’s conference will focus on social entrepreneurship and self-reliance. Learn More
  • Social Venture Competition– This annual competition allows BYU students to work with faculty, practitioners, and professionals to create and submit a business plan that meets a social need and compete to win more than $50,000. Learn More
  • Business Solutions for Development Research– Currently this research initiative is focused on microfranchising. This model helps organizations provide better business opportunities and services to the poor by scaling down franchising concepts found in some of the most successful companies in the world.   • Single Mom Research The Single Mom Initiative brings innovative researchers, practitioners, and sponsors together to conduct ongoing research to better understand single moms in Utah and the challenges they face as they strive to become self-reliant. Learn More
