MicroFranchising Opportunities

MicroFranchising Opportunities (MFO) is a model we at the ESR Center are researching and piloting to provide business opportunities/services to the poor through scaling down many of the franchising concepts found in some of the most success first world companies. We also see MicroFranchising as the model for companies to reach the "Bottom of the Pyramid." This method of distribution has the potential to create revenue for the franchisee and franchisor.

The MFO project is a joint effort between the Economic Self-Reliance Center and the Academy for Creating Enterprise in the Philippines. We see MicroFranchise as small businesses (start-up costs of $300 - $2000) that can be easily replicated throughout developing countries. The overall objective of MicroFranchising is to provide entrepreneurs in developing countries with sound business models and operations manuals that will ultimately alleviate family poverty through increased family income.

The MFO model will also increase family stability through capacity building and asset attainment. The short-term (next 4 months) project will also provide an opportunity for students, it will allow them to conduct research and develop business models that will impact the lives of many people in developing countries. The short term deliverables from this project will be used in the creation of "Where There Are No Jobs" Vol.4 and will be put into action this summer in various countries, by BYU and other university interns.
