Internship Fair Coming the 8th of November, 2006
The ESR Center will be hosting its annual Internship Fair on Wednesday the 8th of November, from 11 am to 4 pm in the Garden Court of the Wilkinson Student Center on BYU Campus. This is a great opportunity for students to interact with our partner organizations to discover ways they can work together to improve the economic self-reliance of families throughout the world. more
Single Mom Initiative Holds Focus Groups
The Single Mom Initiative held two focus groups in September, hearing for the first time directly from single moms. The focus groups discussed topics such as single moms' top challenges, support systems, relationships with the fathers of their children, education, and definitions of success. more
2006-2007 Research Assistants
This year six research assistants (RAs) are working for the Center. These RAs are all Master of Public Administration students who contribute greatly to the operations of the Center and to the perpetuation of research efforts. more
ESR Student Association Grows in Second Year
Last fall the ESR Center sponsored the startup and organization of the Economic Self-Reliance Student Association (ESRSA). During the 2005-2006 school year, the group grew as students interested in economic self-reliance, development, microcredit, and other ESR-related areas joined the association. more
Center Participates in Global Microcredit Summit 2006
The Global Microcredit Summit 2006 will take place 12-15 November 2006 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. According to the Summit organizers, more than 2,000 delegates from over 100 countries are expected to participate at the event, assessing progress made toward the Campaign's goal of reaching 100 million of the world's poorest people by the end of 2005, and launching the second phase of the Campaign. more
Friend of the Center and Partner Organization Win Nobel Peace Prize
The official announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize was made on October 13, 2006:
“The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2006, divided into two equal parts, to Muhammad Yunus and Grameen Bank for their efforts to create economic and social development from below. more
