Internships and Grants

At the Ballard Center, we are passionate about providing students with hands-on learning in the field of social innovation. One of the ways that we do this is through internships and grants.

Students are required to secure their own internships with a social innovative organization. Past interns have done research, worked on marketing campaigns, redesigned systems and helped with evaluation. Grants are intended to provide reimbursement for travel expenses such as airfare and daily living costs.

  • The internships can be done in the United States or abroad in BYU approved areas of travel
  • Interns are chosen through an application process based on a set of criteria (see below)
  • Internships can be over any semester or term
  • Grant amounts vary based on need, project details and center criteria

Internship Grant Criteria

1. The Person (We look for the following criteria in the students)

  • Dedicated to the field of social innovation
  • Investment in the Ballard Center (i.e. through Students for Social Entrepreneurship, Social Venture Competition, etc.)
  • Entrepreneurial Spirit
  • Leadership
  • Vision

2. The Idea (We look for the following criteria in the internship project)

  • Significant learning component for both the student and the organization
  • Clear and impactful deliverables
  • Innovative
  • Leveragability: Project deliverables can be used in other fields and for other practitioners

3. The Impact (We look for the following criteria with the organization)

  • Proposed partner organization is aligned with the Ballard Center mission (high social impact, innovative, scalable, financially sustainable)
  • Partner organization is recognized in the field
  • Potential for long-term partnership
