Social Innovation MinorSocial innovators create high social impact through innovation, scalability, and financial sustainability. The newly created social innovation minor provides BYU graduate students with the skill set needed to embark on their own social change missions. No application is necessary to begin. To qualify for the minor, the following courses of study must be completed (course substitutions are not permitted):
Course DescriptionsNonprofit Structure and FinanceAn introduction to nonprofit organizations, including their history, structure, legal requirements, and finances. Topics include nonprofit corporate structures, tax-exempt status, altruism and economics, and nonprofit revenue sources. Emphasizes what every nonprofit manager and board member should know. Creating and Managing Social VenturesThis course covers issues facing social ventures and social entrepreneurs. Topics include complex systems of for-profit, nonprofit, and hybrid structures. New social impact investing is emphasized. Domestic and international social ventures incorporating managerial theory, practice, and skills into social venture business plans are also addressed.Nonprofit Organization ManagementManaging the various stakeholders in the nonprofit sector, including staff, volunteers, boards of directors, political leaders, media, and other internal and external factors unique to the nonprofit sector.Corporate Social InnovationCorporate social innovation focuses on the role that for-profit businesses play in social innovation, entrepreneurship, and the solution of social problems. The course focuses on traditional and expanded views of corporate social responsibilities, philanthropy, direct investment, partnerships and alliances, and corporate entrepreneurship and innovation.
