Results of Students’ Survey of Service-Learning Experiences

Colorado State University Monterey Bay has had a mandatory service learning requirement since it opened, seven years ago. Data was collected from pre and post tests in the required GE course and also from the end of the semester evaluations of all service learning courses. Overall, the analysis is very positive.

  • 72% said that as a result of their experience their attitude toward service had become “more positive.”
  • 88% said that their service activities enhanced their learning experience “a great deal” or “quite a lot.”
  • 91% said they feel more comfortable participating in the community after the service-learning experience.

In addition, the results indicated that students’ sense of “Civic Responsibility” and “Service Self-Efficacy” both show statistically significant increases.

  • Civic Responsibility is defined as the value students place on participating in the community through service
  • Service Self-Efficacy is defined as the students’ belief that they have a positive impact on the community and their advocacy working in a multicultural community.
