Mission Statememt

"The Mission of the School of Accountancy is to assist individuals in their quest for perfection and eternal life as they cultivate commitment to life-long learning and service, effective and ethical leadership, management, and interpersonal skills, and excellence in the use of accounting, and tax to provide solutions to problems facing family, church, community, and business."

The following five values guide the School of Accountancy at BYU: 

Curriculum
To facilitate continuous innovation and improvement of pedagogy, curriculum, instructional materials, and technology.

Faculty
To promote faculty excellence in teaching and research, and to foster an attitude of responsibility and service toward the Church, the University and society.

External Relations
To foster effective partnerships with stakeholders in the SOA and its programs.

Internal Operations
To effectively and efficiently manage the SOA's economic and human resources.

Students
To educate student with accounting skills leadership abilities, and ethical values that will enhance the students' opportunities for success in worldwide organizations.

Strategies

  • Maintain an innovative, relevant, competency-based curriculum that focuses on student knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to excel in a changing business environment.
  • Maintain a teaching environment that employs a variety of teaching methods, learning experiences, and interactions that improve student learning in all programs.
  • Create a learning environment that provides a separate identity to graduate students.
  • Acquire and integrate current technology and a global perspective throughout the curriculum.
  • Develop and institute an effective assessment process at both the program and course level.

FACULTY

Strategies

  • Require faculty to make specific personal plans on how they will achieve excellence in the three areas of faculty responsibility.
  • Evaluate and reward faculty on how well they meet their personal plans.
  • Recognize faculty who have exceeded expectations in their pursuit of excellence.
  • Implement processes that provide for and promote development of faculty and staff and encourage faculty and staff to take advantage of development opportunities.
  • Encourage service to the SOA, MSM, University, profession, and society.
  • Hire new faculty who have demonstrated the highest levels of potential for excellence in teaching and research and who have a commitment to Christian values.

EXTERNAL RELATIONS

Strategies

  • Maintain appropriate external support groups and promote relationships with stakeholders.
  • Establish effective means of communication and networking with stakeholders in the SOA and its programs.
  • Encourage active participation in the activities and programs of professional and academic associations.
  • Facilitate and promote the placement of SOA students.

INTERNAL OPERATIONS

Strategies

  • Maintain fiscal responsibilities in SOA activities.
  • Maintain an effective and efficient support staff to assist students and faculty in accomplishing the mission of the SOA.
  • Administrators will lead by example, value the input of others, and be fair and benevolent in carrying out the policies and procedures of the SOA, MSM, and BYU.
  • Provide opportunities for faculty and staff input and service to the governance of SOA.
  • Provide student advising and career counseling services that fit the needs of SOA students.

STUDENTS

Strategies

  • Attract, admit, and maintain students who have a high potential for success in accounting.

  • Provide students with the opportunity to develop technical and research skills necessary for them to achieve success in their professional careers.
  • Provide an opportunity for students to develop a global perspective.
