Admission Criteria

Each student pursuing the MAcc degree will choose an area of specialization in Professional Accountancy or Tax. The requirements for each emphasis can be found under Curriculum.

The MAcc program begins in the fall semester and the application deadline is March 1 of the same year.

FORMER BYU OR TRANSFER STUDENTS WITH A BACHELOR'S DEGREE

Prerequisites

Students with a bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, or other disciplines from BYU or another accredited university may apply to the MAcc degree program. A student who does not have an undergraduate degree in accounting must complete the classes as listed below, or their equivalents. We do not allow provisional admissions. Students may be enrolled in any of the prerequisites at the time of application. Students are required to complete these classes before they enter the MAcc program.

The Business Fundamentals may be taken at any junior or community college. However, the Accounting Jr. Core classes (or their equivalents) must be taken at an accredited college or university that offers a four-year accounting degree, such as Utah Valley State College, Weber State University, University of Utah, Utah State University or Southern Utah University. GMAT

The GMAT test is required of all students who have not completed the Accounting Jr. Core at BYU. Although the minimum GMAT score required is 500, students with a GMAT score of less than 600 are rarely admitted, and the average GMAT score for students admitted Fall 2006 was 630. If an applicant retakes the GMAT test, the higher of the scores is used. For information regarding the GMAT exam, go to their website at: www.mba.com

GPA

The minimum GPA is 3.0 for the last 60 hours a student has completed. It should be noted that the average GPA of applicants admitted Fall 2006 was approximately 3.70.

Deadline

The application deadline is March 1. Admission decisions are made mid-May, and all applicants are notified by the end of May. Notification will be sent in a letter from Graduate Studies. Applicants who are admitted to the MAcc program will receive an email from the department that includes instructions for accepting the admission offer, a proposed graduation plan to be submitted, and registration information.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

In addition, the SOA also has a limited amount of scholarship money available for graduate students based on academic performance and need.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Prerequisites

Students with a bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, or other disciplines from BYU or another accredited university may apply to the MAcc degree program. Unless a student has completed a bachelor’s degree in accounting, they usually have not completed the required prerequisites. A student who does not have an undergraduate degree in accounting must complete the classes as listed below.

GMAT

TOEFL or IELTS

The TOEFL or IELTS score is valid for two years. The TOEFL/IELTS requirement is waived for international applicants who have received an undergraduate degree from an accredited university in the United States.
