First Annual BYU Accounting Research Symposium a Big Success

The School of Accountancy and Information Sysytems sponsored the first annual BYU Accounting Research Symposium 14-16 October 2004. More than seventy-five people attended the symposium, including current pre-doctoral students, former BYU students enrolled in PhD programs around the country, BYU faculty, and friends of BYU. Keynote speakers were Lynn Turner, former chief accountant of the SEC; Steve Cleveland, BYU head basketball coach; and Steve Albrecht, Marriott School associate dean. The purpose of the symposium was to unite BYU alumni and friends in working toward the common goal to have a significant influence in the development of consequential accounting research. In particular, this symposium focused on giving current doctoral students and new faculty a venue for presenting and receiving feedback on their research and research ideas in an effort to help “jump start” their academic careers.

The symposium began with a welcome reception Thursday evening, 14 October, featuring an inspirational message by Steve Cleveland. Friday, 15 October, included a full schedule of research presentations, a presentation on how to prepare for an academic career by Steve Albrecht, and a group discussion about current issues in accounting led by Lynn Turner. Saturday, 16 October, rounded out the event with a half day of research presentations and, of course, BYU’s homecoming football victory against the University of Wyoming.

Presenters and participants came from universities across the nation including Stanford, Cornell, Chicago, North Carolina, Illinois, and others. The research symposium was a huge success. The planning committee is already preparing for the second annual symposium next fall. This year’s symposium focused on accounting research. In the future, the SOAIS is planning to expand the symposium to include information systems research as the MISM’s pre-doctoral program continues to develop.

Albrecht Accepts Top Accounting Awards and National Appointment

The Auditing Section of the American Accounting Association (AAA) recently honored Marriott School Associate Dean W. Steve Albrecht as the “Outstanding Auditing Educator”. Linda McDaniel, president of the AAA auditing section stated, “While [Professor Albrecht] has been an outstanding teacher in his university setting, he has clearly made an effort to educate the public and the profession on this important topic.” In September 2004 the Utah Association of CPAs (UACPA) also honored Albrecht as the “Outstanding CPA in Business and Management.” Only one person receives this award from the UACPA each year. In addition to receiving these prestigious awards, Albrecht was recently appointed to the Financial Accounting Foundation—the organization that governs both the Financial Accounting Standards Board and the Governmental Accounting Standards Board. As a foundation trustee, Albrecht helps determine accounting standards for the country.

“The Financial Accounting Foundation is like the Supreme Court of Accountancy,” says Ned C. Hill, Marriott School dean. “Steve has earned the respect of his colleagues around the world, and we’re especially grateful to have him on our team at BYU.”

Members of the FAF must be nominated by one of eight constituent organizations—such as the American Accounting Association, Institute of Management Accountants, or American Institute of Certified Public Accountants—and then approved by the other trustees. Albrecht is one of only two academics who sit on the foundation board. Other trustees include top CEOs, CFOs, senior partners, and former government officials.

Albrecht has received numerous other awards and honors, including BYU’s highest faculty honor, the Karl G. Maeser Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Award for superior scholarship and teaching
