What is Recreation Management?

Recreation management is the study of recreation experiences widely applied to individuals, families, organizations, and businesses. Recreation management professionals design and manage meaningful recreation experiences that engage, heal, build relationships, create joy, and foster personal growth. Professionals provide recreation experiences to diverse populations and manage public, private, or nonprofit recreation venues and events.

BS Recreation Management Program

The BS Recreation Management program prepares students through rigorous course work, hands-on experience, and mentored career preparation. A special emphasis is placed on experiential learning as well as application of management knowledge to the field of recreation, events, and venues.

Students in the program will:

  • Understand the role of recreation and leisure in promoting a high quality of life.
  • Develop high levels of skill in critical thinking, writing, and problem solving.
  • Demonstrate entry-level knowledge about operations, strategic management, organizational behavior, and administration.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate services that facilitate targeted human experiences and that embrace personal and cultural dimensions of diversity.

Students pursue one of two emphases within the BS Recreation Management major: experience industry management or therapeutic recreation.

Students interested in applying for the program should review Marriott School application requirements and program prerequisites. The BS Recreation Management program is limited enrollment and accepts students on a rolling basis beginning each fall semester.

Upon acceptance into the program, students will complete a series of courses, according to the emphasis they choose. All recreation management students also complete the Marriott School’s management core classes and an internship. Students will have the opportunity to take electives that focus on a specific emphasis within the program. Throughout their time in the program, students have multiple opportunities to serve in leadership positions, present their work to colleagues and industry experts, and receive mentoring from professionals.
