Top BYU Marriott Stories of 2017

PROVO, Utah – Dec 29, 2017 – Name changes, rankings, awards and more—here is the list of the top BYU Marriott School of Business stories of 2017.

10) Budgeting App Takes Top Prize
A slew of exciting new apps were on display at the Rollins Center's annual Mobile App Competition.

9) Investing Globally in Future Careers
Billed as “the nation’s only true global, student-managed investment fund,” the Global Finance Investment Internship is giving students international experience with real money.

8) Big Winners at Purdue
BYU Marriott teams swept an HR competition in Indiana, taking first place in both the undergraduate and MBA divisions.

7) Alumni Consult for the Church
After spending time at global strategy consulting firms, LaDon Linde and Justin Oldroyd took their talents to the Office of the Presiding Bishopric.

6) Inspiring Words
Eva Witesman, associate professor in the Romney Institute of Public Management, spoke to the BYU community about the importance of obtaining education in preparation for the future God sees in all of His children. Her remarks were the second-most viewed of the year on BYU Speeches.

5) Winning Hosts
Not only did BYU Marriott host Deloitte Consulting’s fourth annual Supply Chain Challenge, a team of MBA students won the competition as well!

4) Information Systems Faculty Receive Research Recognition
For the first time, BYU Marriott information systems faculty ranked in the top ten for the most articles in top research publications. Individually, four faculty were ranked in the top twenty-five. To top it off, a paper co-authored by three information systems faculty won the Information Systems Research Best Paper award.

3) More Than a Competition
Kindall and Erica Palmer were part of a student team that won $50,000 from the Ballard Center's Y-Prize Competition for their plan aid distribution of infant ventilators to developing countries. But the project turned personal when the couple's own first child became dependent on the same ventilator.

2) Rankings Galore
BYU Marriott programs were recognized as being top tier in the nation by multiple publications this year. A sampling include a No. 19 ranking for the MBA program by Forbes, a No. 1 most family-friendly designation and No. 3 human resource program for the MBA program by U.S. News, Princeton Review ranking our undergraduate program No. 3 and our graduate program No. 6, and U.S. News naming our undergraduate programs No. 31, including a No. 3 rank for our accounting program and No. 16 placement for our international business program.

1) School Name Changes, Majors Added 
The Brigham Young University Board of Trustees approved a change to the name of the university’s business school and two of its departments in addition to changing seven undergraduate emphases to majors. Announced in August, the school changed its name to the BYU Marriott School of Business. The department of management and department of experience design and management were renamed, and the entrepreneurial management, experience design and management, global supply chain management, human resource management, marketing, strategic management, and therapeutic recreation management majors were established.
