FAQ
What if I am not a BYU student or alumni?
Only BYU students and alumni may submit a film. Team members do not have to be BYU students or alumni. If you have a solution to a social problem, or are a filmmaker wanting to produce a film for the competition, please view our database of talent and add your information.
How many films may I submit for consideration?
You may submit as many films as you would like. Please submit films that fit the criteria of a “Solution to a Social Problem.”
May I submit a film if I am a BYU-Idaho or BYU-Hawaii student or alumni?
Yes, you may submit a film if you are a student or alumni from BYU-Provo, BYU-Idaho, or BYU-Hawaii.
What if I don’t have a specific idea for a film subject?
The Ballard Center has a list of teams working on social ventures that would like to connect to potential filmmakers. You can add your own contact information or contact social innovators on our database of talent.
What if I have an idea, but am looking for a filmmaker?
The Ballard Center has a list of filmmakers working on social ventures that would like to connect with social venture teams. You can add your own contact information or contact filmmakers on our online database of talent.
What if I want advice for the progress, quality, etc of my film?
By submitting your film on or before September 11th, we will review your film and give feedback. Contact Rose Palmer (rose_palmer@byu.edu) or Lauren Thomas (lauren_thomas@byu.edu) for more help in producing films.
How will my film be judged and how will finalists be chosen?
Films will be judged based on:
- Quality of Film
- Depiction of Social Problem
- Quality of Solution Presented
- Accuracy and Legitimacy
You will be notified by Friday, October 6 if your film will be screened as a finalist in the Peery Film Festival.
What prizes and awards will be given out?
$8,000 in cash prizes will be awarded for excellent films.
Prize distribution and categories are subject to change, but last year’s prizes went to the
- 1st place film - $3,000
- 2nd place film - $2,000
- 3rd place film - $1,000
- Audience choice - $500
- Best solution to a social problem - $500
- Best cinematography - $500
- Exceptional description to a social issue - $500
