BYU Marriott Closing Banquet 2019
Nominee Info
Undergraduate Nominees
I’m a senior in the marketing program, graduating this spring. I was raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, and will be returning to the Midwest after graduation. I’ll be joining LinkedIn’s Chicago office for a rotational program starting in July. Although there are a myriad of qualities that I love about BYU Marriott, I am particularly grateful for the supportive community it provides with diverse majors, professors, clubs, and classmates, we are invested in the success of all. One of my favorite ways to stay involved in the BYU Marriott community is through clubs. I am currently the co president of Women in Business and the director of events for the Marketing Association. Outside of reserving study rooms in the Tanner, I love singing, traveling, volunteering, spending time with friends, and improving my poor athletic skills.
Although my first words were “debits on the left, credits on the right,” I have found joy and excitement in more than just accounting here at BYU. I was born and raised in the great state of Michigan and made the trek out to Utah to attend Brigham Young University in 2016. While at BYU, I have served as a program director in Y-Serve, a vice president in the Accounting Society, and a partner with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. After graduation, I plan to relocate to Charlotte, North Carolina, to work in an international tax group for a public accounting firm.
I try to keep a diverse profile outside of accounting. In 2018 I completed the coursework for a minor in Spanish Studies. I can be found training for a marathon, playing in the third division of the wallyball intramural tournament, or spending time with my wife debating the economics of the medical field. Despite many of my passions outside of the Tanner Building, BYU Marriott School of Business, with its incredible faculty and excellent students, continues to be one of the focal points of my BYU experience.
Mitch Larson’s initial college plans did not include coming to BYU. Fortunately enough, one thing led to another and a few short months after his mission to Santiago, Chile, in 2015, Larson found himself walking up the south campus staircase on his first day of class at Brigham Young University. That decision to come to BYU has made all of the difference for him.
Following his acceptance into the marketing program, Larson was heavily involved in various business and marketing clubs. He currently serves as the co president of the BYU Pre-Business Student Association (PBSA) with Eliza McGill Blake. With what he considers the team of the century, Larson was able to work with PBSA leadership in a complete rebranding and restructuring of the organization. He considers his involvement in PBSA his biggest contribution to BYU Marriott and its students, as well as the greatest impact BYU Marriott has had on his college experience. He owes everything to his family and those closest to him, including his parents, Shane and Adrienne, and his aunt, Andrea Thomas, who convinced him to come to BYU and has become his most influential mentor. Following graduation, Larson plans to attend the month long Global Marketing Study Abroad, after which he will begin a full-time position with Canopy Tax in Lehi, Utah as a content marketing analyst.
Brooke Squires is a senior in the supply chain program and is currently serving as president of the Global Supply Chain Association (GSCA). She is from Stansbury Park, Utah. Her work experience includes internships with Overstock.com, the Utah Jazz, and FangShye (a Taiwan-based company). She will work as a supply chain consultant with Sunrise Technologies after graduation. Part of her love of supply chain management has stemmed from her love of traveling, learning new languages, and experiencing new cultures. Squires speaks Spanish from her mission in Chile and has been learning Mandarin since her internship in China last summer. She is passionate about international development and would like to help businesses improve their sustainability in the future. In her free time, Squires enjoys rock climbing, watching Jazz basketball games, and trying out new restaurants. Her favorite animal is a llama and she has a bouncy ball collection. She is immensely grateful for her time at BYU Marriott, where she has learned from incredible professors and made dear friends.
Graduate Nominees
Spencer Adkins is from Tulare, California and is an MBA student at BYU Marriott. Prior to the MBA, I worked in the geographic information systems (GIS) field at both NASA and a software company called Azteca Systems. I came to the MBA program to pursue a career in brand management, a completely different field and industry than what I was used to. I was fortunate enough to land an internship with The Hershey Company last summer, and my experience there confirmed my passion for brand management. This summer, I’ll begin my career as an associate brand manager at General Mills in Minneapolis.
I would have never have imaged being where I am today when I was young. When I was thirteen, I was put on probation while my two best friends were sent to a juvenile detention center. I made a lot of dumb decisions up to that point in my life and was fortunate to be given a chance to change. What I love most about BYU Marriott is that I feel comfortable with who I am, where I came from, and what I have experienced in my life, which has inspired me to do my best to help others feel the same. My two years in the MBA program have been among the greatest of my life, and I can’t wait to give back in any way that I can!
I am from Highland, Utah. Upon graduation, I plan to work in capital markets and accounting advisory for PwC in the Dallas office. An interesting fact about me is that if I couldn’t study accounting, I would have studied American History. I love what BYU Marriott has taught me about giving back. Faculty such as Brian Voigt, Stan Wilson, Monte Swain, and Tina Ashby have sacrificed opportunities for higher pay in an effort to interact with and help students develop educationally, professionally, and spiritually. Many of my peers participate in club leadership, mentorship, and social innovation in efforts to give back to underclassmen and under served demographics. These people inspire me to live a generous and service-centered life.
I served a mission in Quito, Ecuador, where I fell in love with the Latino culture. I noticed a stark contrast between the lives of those who graduated from high school and college and those who did not. I determined to graduate with a degree in accounting and to continue to use my Spanish language skills to someday do financial planning for low-income Latino families. My goal is to teach money management, helping them save money for education.
I was raised in Clovis, California and thoroughly enjoy sunshine, milkshakes, and experiencing new places. My favorite thing about BYU Marriott is being surrounded by ambitious people who sincerely want to help others. Whether it's a conversation with a professor, working with my peers, or listening to a guest speaker, I've felt extremely motivated by the goodness that walks the halls of the Tanner Building. During my time at BYU, I've served with Beta Alpha Psi, traveled around Europe on the Accounting Study Abroad, and volunteered doing taxes with the VITA lab for multiple years. After graduation, I'm hiking in Nepal to celebrate the end of homework! Then my husband and I are moving to Dallas, Texas, where he will start physical therapy school, and I will work at Ernst & Young in the People Advisory Services group. I still haven't figured out what I want to be when I grow up, but the journey to do so has been enjoyable.
Jennifer is a second-year MBA candidate focusing on entrepreneurship and international business. She is currently the president of the Graduate Entrepreneurship Association (GEA). Scherbel originally hails from Afton, Wyoming. Prior to beginning her MBA studies, she lived in the Bay Area where she first worked as an auditor and later as a finance consultant for PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC). She completed her undergraduate degree at Brigham Young University–Idaho, graduating with a bachelor's degree in accounting and business management. Her love of business comes from her parents and grandparents, who are all entrepreneurs. After graduation, Scherbel will be working in the start up world and ultimately would like to create a few companies of her own. Scherbel intends to open a venture capital fund in Central and South America, drawing on her accounting background and experience during her MBA program in Cougar Capital, a BYU MBA venture fund. Some of Scherbel’s favorite pastimes include helping friends start businesses, traveling the world to experience different cultures, playing sports, assembling LEGO sets, and coaching her ten-year-old niece’s basketball team. There are many things that Scherbel loves about BYU Marriott, but most of all she is grateful for the countless opportunities available and the doors that have been opened because of the service of so many students and faculty members.

One of the things he most loves about BYU Marriottl is the sincere desire that faculty and students have to help each other progress and succeed both temporally and eternally. One of the most rewarding things about working at BYU is witnessing students apply their skills and hearts to improving life for others using what they have learned here.
