IMA Honors BYU Student and Professor

PROVO, Utah – May 18, 2016 – In a big win for Brigham Young University’s School of Accountancy, 2016 graduate Kevin Steed and Deloitte Professor of Accountancy Monte Swain were named recipients of prestigious awards from the Institute of Management Accountants. They will be formally recognized at the IMA’s Annual Conference and Exposition in June.

“We are very proud of our faculty and students who consistently represent BYU so well in all their endeavors,” says Jeff Wilks, School of Accountancy director and EY professor.

Steed, a St. George, Utah, native who earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting this past April and was president of the BYU IMA student chapter, will be presented with the 2016 Student Manuscript Award. He is the first BYU student to win the manuscript competition. His work, “Monopoly, Accounting, and the IMA,” will be published on the IMA website in the coming months.

“I’m honored to be the first BYU student to receive this award, especially since BYU’s IMA student chapter is only a few years old,” Steed says. “As the IMA continues to develop on BYU campus, I hope to see more BYU students receive this award in the future.”

Swain, who has researched and taught management accounting since graduating from Michigan State University in 1991, will add the 2016 R. Lee Brummet Distinguished Award for Educators to his list of numerous teaching awards. The Brummet Award is given to one esteemed academician each year and is based on four criteria: a distinguished teaching career, published academic articles and scholarships, service to the IMA and promotion of management accounting as a profession.

“Monte’s recognition is well deserved,” Wilks says. “He has served tirelessly for years among his fellow management accounting professors, and no one cares more for his students than Monte.”

The Marriott School is located at Brigham Young University, the largest privately owned, church-sponsored university in the United States. The school has nationally recognized programs in accounting, business management, entrepreneurship, finance, information systems and public management.
