For Sue Mika, the executive MPA program in the BYU Marriott School of Business is more than just a program— it’s a connection to someone she loves and respects: her grandfather and namesake of the program, George W. Romney. Now, as a second-year EMPA student, Mika shares a unique bond with her late grandfather.

Ching Tong, a self-declared “people person” from Sandy, Utah, finds the most joy in life when she’s building relationships with others. During her time at the BYU Marriott School of Business, the 2020 MISM graduate found belonging and purpose through connections with faculty and students in the Department of Information Systems (IS). Now living in New York City, Tong continues to seek fulfilling connections with her coworkers, friends, and anyone else she meets.

Upon completing his undergraduate degree in environmental science from BYU, Trenton Blair, compelled by the camaraderie he felt as a cadet in BYU’s Air Force ROTC program, jetted from soil labs to B-52 cockpits. After serving nearly a decade in the military, Blair has completed two deployments, forged lifelong connections, and recently landed a coveted assignment.

Coming to a new country and not knowing the language can be scary. Not knowing what you want to do with your life can also be scary. While Aaron Cruz Morales, a senior majoring in finance at the BYU Marriott School of Business, faced both of these challenges, he was able to overcome them with a strong work ethic and people to help him along the way.

When April Teames Gantz isn’t enjoying the great outdoors with her husband, you’ll find her actively engaged in projects to benefit the community. A senior in the user experience (UX) design program at BYU’s College of Fine Arts and Communications, Teames Gantz participates in groups dedicated to various causes. As a student, she finds fulfillment through working with teams formed within BYU Marriott’s Rollins Center for Technology and Entrepreneurship.

Everywhere you look, something or someone is being rated, and we can all agree that a positive rating is good, and a negative rating is bad. Or can we?

For three undergraduate marketing students from the BYU Marriott School of Business, the best part of winning Blip’s marathon case competition wasn’t taking home the impressive $20,000 prize. Rather, the highlight was making a difference in the community by helping a local nonprofit achieve its vision.

When Ronell Hugh worked as an account manager after graduating from college, he quickly realized he wanted to make decisions about products instead of simply overseeing customers using them. Hugh was told he would need an MBA for such a goal, which he earned in 2010 at the BYU Marriott School of Business. While the degree gave Hugh the career path he was looking for, other aspects of the program ended up being much more meaningful to him.

This summer, four BYU Marriott School of Business students were paired with financial literacy startup FinLit for an internship. The partnership came about through a social impact project (SIP) at BYU Marriott’s Ballard Center for Social Impact, which provides students with opportunities to develop business and personal skills while applying social impact principles in real-world settings.

During her time at BYU, Chauma Jansen received a scholarship from American Indian Services for her undergraduate studies. That scholarship helped her through school, and she was able to receive both her bachelor’s degree in sociology and master’s degree in public administration from BYU. Twenty years later, as a BYU Marriott alumna and the executive director of American Indian Services, Jansen works to assist others in the same way she was helped.

As a child, Bethany Bahr loved riding on towering roller coasters, and her mom would joke that Bethany wasn't scared of anything. Since then, Bahr has enjoyed the twists and turns that come from stepping outside her comfort zone. On one of her most recent adventures, Bahr applied to the strategy major at the BYU Marriott School of Business.

“Curiosity killed the cat” has long been a phrase that discourages inquisitiveness and one with which Ben Iverson would disagree. For Iverson, curiosity is what drives him to learn, and few things are more exciting to him than the prospect of a new discovery.

A life-changing conversation with a U.S. Army recruiter led Jack Sturgeon to join the military. After 25 years of helicopter flying and rescue operations, Sturgeon came to BYU as an army recruiter, helping students who are much like he was find their way. 

Tyler Hardy was one day away from finishing his mission in Veracruz, Mexico, when he got an unexpected phone call. His older brother, Greg, had been seriously injured in a work accident and was hovering between life and death. That pivotal moment in Hardy’s young life reaffirmed to him the importance of family. Later when Hardy attended the BYU Marriott School of Business and then pursued his career, that value of family never changed.  

Almost half of American adults don’t meet recommended weekly physical activity levels, but new BYU research suggests a surprisingly simple way to help increase exercise time: just strap on an activity monitor.

At the Ballard Center for Social Impact in the BYU Marriott School of Business, students are learning how to solve the world’s most pressing social problems—tackling issues such as poverty, homelessness, environmental sustainability, and more. Jess Dansie Anderson, the center’s managing director of marketing and communications, is working hard to reach and inspire more students across campus to become changemakers.

For Clay Posey, a professor of information systems (IS) at the BYU Marriott School of Business, two things his students do give him pause. The first is tolerating massive amounts of stress as they try to fit multiple activities, school responsibilities, and other obligations within limited time frames. The second is consuming fry sauce.

BYU Marriott's interdisciplinary Healthcare Leadership Collaborative is already filling a critical gap in the healthcare industry.

Despite knowing almost nothing about the military, Chaim Zuniga followed a prompting and joined BYU’s Army ROTC program, which is hosted through the BYU Marriott School of Business. Now, Zuniga—who credits God for his life’s direction—plans to become a United States Army chaplain so he can help others spiritually. 

As an artist and musician, Alexa Fox wanted a career that would enable her to use her creativity. Fox discovered the experience design and management program at BYU Marriott and, now a senior, is using the program's blend of creativity and business skills to prepare for a career in consulting.
