Admission Criteria

Preparing to Apply

Competition to get into the accounting program is high. Historically, more than 85 percent of applicants are admitted.

In order to have a strong application, we recommend taking the following steps:

  • Earn good grades in your courses. The minimum prerequisite GPA to apply is 3.0, but the prerequisite GPA of admitted students in 2020 was between 3.04 and 4.00. Grades will be evaluated by assessing the following:
    • Prerequisite grades
      • Students that elect a P grade for prerequisites taken in winter 2020 are welcome to apply. That is, for these students, the B minimum grade policy for ACC 200 and ACC 310 will be waived.
      • Instructor-assigned letter grades in ACC 200 and ACC 310 will be considered as part of the prerequisite GPA regardless of the semester in which these courses were taken. Students taking either of these courses Winter 2020 may still choose the P/W option for what is reported on their official university transcript; however, the accounting program will be looking at instructor-assigned grades when making admissions decisions.
      • IS 201 will use posted university grades.
    • Last 30-credit-hour GPA and BYU GPA (calculations will use the posted university grades)
  • Substantially complete GE courses.
  • Prerequisite GPA and overall BYU GPA are considered.

Students may apply as soon as they have completed the prerequisite courses. Students will begin their junior core courses in the Fall Semester of their junior year.

The application is due on the last business day of June at 4:30 p.m. All prerequisites must be completed in order to apply.
