Former BYU Students Featured on Cover of Inc. Magazine

Inc. magazine recently featured three former Brigham Young University students and their composting company, EcoScraps, as part of a report on innovative social entrepreneurs.

EcoScraps, a composting company that takes all of its raw material from grocery stores and produce wholesalers' waste, was touted as a company with a smart business model and positive effect on the environment. The article, which highlights five other companies, describes Ecoscraps' success as it grew from three students experimenting with compost in a parking lot to a blossoming business with a 30 percent profit margin. Along the way the students, Daniel Blake, Brandon Sargent and Craig Martineau, submitted their business plan to BYU's Social Venture Competition and won second place.

"We were surprised when we found out we were going to be on the cover," Blake says. "We are excited not only for the exposure but also for the credibility that it extends to our sustainable business model, a model where all stakeholders involved have an incentive to do the right thing."
